February 27, 2002Scholarships available for youth to attend church-based camp
The Lucy Hornbeck Bless the Children Fund was created in the Harrison County Community Foundation last year to provide scholarships for youth to attend church-based camps.
The fund was established by Dale and Debra Watson of Corydon in memory of Lucy Hornbeck, a Jefferson County, Ky. school teacher who had no children of her own. A member of Audubon Baptist Church in Louisville, she died in October 2000 at the age of 88.
"She was always very dedicated to children in all she did, mostly through her work as a teacher and through her church," said Debra Watson. "She always gave a lot of herself when it came to children."
The scholarship fund will provide support to needs-based families desiring to send a child to camp without exclusion of or priority given to any denomination. A sponsoring church, on behalf of the interested family, must request the funds.
"The fund is new, so this year we will only be able to provide four $50 scholarships for camp," said endowment committee chair Sally Williar. "We are asking any interested congregation to limit their request to fund one child from their church."
Financial background information on the child's family need not be disclosed," added executive director Steve Gilliland. "We will rely on the honesty and judgement of our church leadership so that these funds will serve those with the greatest needs."
Applications must be returned to the foundation office no later than April 1. For an application or to donate to this fund, contact the foundation office at 738-6668.
