The Harrison County Community Foundation expects to give away 1,000 "Support Our Troops" yard signs on Saturday.

The red, white and blue signs will be handed out beginning at 9 a.m. at the Jay C Food Store in the Old Capital Plaza as supplies last. One sign will be given per family.

Eighty percent of the costs of the signs will be contributed to military families in the region who have been hurt financially by the war in Iraq.

"A lot of these people had to leave better-paying jobs to go to Iraq," said HCCF director Steve Gilliland.

Following a suggestion from a member of the community that the Foundation provide the signs, the Foundation discovered that Kroger Stores is sponsoring the signs at $1.17 each and selling them for $5. Of that, $4 is contributed to military societies to help military families and Kroger absorbs the 17-cent-loss per sign.

"The board decided to buy those because 80 percent goes to support military families," Gilliland said.
