The Harrison County Community Foundation has awarded $589,825 to 38 organizations in its Spring 2005 Grant Cycle.

Sixty requests were received seeking a total of more than $1.6 million.

"Citizens of our county have realized great benefits as a result of the Foundation's ability to fund the many requests of those who provide needed and valuable services," said Don Gossman, who chairs the Foundation's grants committee. "Decisions of our committee, and approval of the board of directors, are a result of thoughtful and difficult consideration.

"We are pleased with our results for this grant cycle and look forward to the next challenge in the fall."

Successful applicants are:

American Diabetes Association, $1,000 to provide diabetes camp scholarships to Harrison County children in need of financial assistance;

Bellarmine University, $16,000 to provide retention scholarships for Harrison County residents attending Bellarmine;

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, $13,000 to expand school-based mentoring program to North Harrison schools;

Blue River Services Inc., $40,000 to rehabilitate housing needed to provide a local match for a four-unit apartment building;

Blue River Services Inc., $55,000 to purchase computer equipment and upgrade software applications;

Boy Scout Troop 25, $1,520 to purchase trailer;

Boy Scout Troop 4071, $1,520 to purchase camping equipment and partially fund a summer trip;

Boy Scout Troop 47, $1,520 to purchase propane cooker and trailer;

Comfort House, $2,500 for coloring book printing and resource materials;

Community Unity Inc., $2,000 to provide entertainment for the 2005 World on the Square festival;

Evans Landing Historical Foundation Inc., $8,000 for repairs to historical church;

Family Health Center of Clark County Inc., $7,270 to explore clinic in Harrison County for the medically indigent;

Freed From Within Inc., $14,914 for labor and materials for new roof;

Habitat for Humanity of Harrison County, $30,000 for financial support of Habitat House III and IV;

Harrison County Community Services Inc., $65,000 for operating costs, education components;

Harrison County Fire Chiefs Association, $45,000 for training and equipment testing;

Harrison County Parks Dept., $8,800 for starting blocks, hardware and installation at South Harrison Park pool;

Harrison County Parks Dept., $3,000 in support of the Battle of Corydon reenactment 2005;

Hoosier Hills PACT, $5,000 for support services for victims of crime in Harrison County;

Hospice and Palliative Care of Southern Indiana, $10,150 to purchase laptop computers;

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana Inc., $17,600 to provide J.A. programs for 812 students in Harrison County;

Lanesville Community School Corp., $3,100 for supplies to pilot an art enrichment program;

Lanesville Community School Corp., $3,343 to purchase books;

Leadership Harrison County, $4,000 to highlight volunteer opportunities through inserts in The Corydon Democrat;

Main Street Corydon, $5,000 to provide local match for grant to provide an environmental study;

North Harrison Cal Ripken baseball team, $16,500 for dugout roofs, irrigation system and batting cages;

North Harrison Elementary School, $1,310 for books, meals and supplies for nursing home service project;

North Harrison High School, $10,500 for materials to construct greenhouse;

North Harrison High School, $1,500 for student attendance at the state FFA convention;

North Harrison High School, $1,000 to cover fees for students to attend a livestock artificial insemination course;

North Harrison Middle School, $3,150 to purchase sewing machines;

North Harrison Youth Softball Association, $125,000 for concession stand, paved walkways, brick dust and dugouts;

Our Place Inc., $5,750 for scholarships for Harrison County youth to attend drug and alcohol education treatment;

South Central Elementary School, $19,986 to purchase books;

Spencer Township, $5,987 to purchase tables, chairs and carts for the community room at the new fire house;

The Center for Women and Families, $12,000 in support of domestic violence and rape crisis services in Harrison County;

The Next Step Inc., $13,000 for building repair and maintenance; and

YMCA of Harrison County Inc., $10,405 to purchase equipment for scuba certification classes.

Created by the Harrison County Commissioners and an initial contribution of $5 million from Caesars Indiana, the Foundation has now awarded more than $10 million in scholarships, grants and sponsorships. With additional contributions from the public and Caesars, the Foundation has a current market value of more than $49 million.

Grant applications will be accepted after June 1 for the Fall 2005 Grant Cycle. Applications must be postmarked or delivered to the HCCF office by 5 p.m. on July 15. Applications will be available after May 1 from the Foundation Web site or by contacting the staff. All non-profit agencies serving Harrison County are invited to apply.

A two-hour grant application workshop will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, in the Harrison Center Conference Room in downtown Corydon. Changes in the application, grant-making process and policy changes will be discussed in an informal environment. Anyone planning to attend should RSVP the Foundation staff.
