The Harrison County Community Foundation has established a new renewable scholarship program, “Building Our Future Scholarship.”
Since 1998, HCCF has provided $1.7 million in non-renewable scholarships to graduating seniors of Harrison County high schools through the Seniors Scholarship Program. This is the first renewable scholarship program offered by the Foundation.
“The board members have discussed the possibility of renewable scholarships for several years now; we just had to find a way to make it work. With the resources available to us now, we felt the time was right,” said Stephen Bodney, chairman of this scholarship ad-hoc committee. “We are so thankful that our committee was able to work closely with the finance committee to make this become a reality.”
HCCF will provide each year up to 10 $5,000 renewable scholarships for a total value of $20,000 each. The board of directors will determine annually the number available to each high school based primarily upon senior class size as reported by the high schools in January.
Students will apply through their high school counselor’s office, and recipients will be selected by designated high school selection committees. Harrison County residents who are home-schooled or attend a private school or outside public school are also eligible for this scholarship program. They may apply for the scholarships through the closest Harrison County high school district or the district in which they reside.
The scholarships may be used for attendance at any accredited school and will pay for tuition, books, fees, housing or supplies billed through the institution. The student must pursue a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and be enrolled full time. A minimum 2.5 of 4.0 or 3.75 of 6.0 GPA must be maintained during enrollment and recipients must provide HCCF with semester-end grade reports.
“We are very excited about the addition of this new scholarship program. This is just one more way we can help build the future of Harrison County,” said Steve Gilliland, Foundation executive director.
