The family and friends of the late Philip Pace have recently established a scholarship fund in his memory at the Harrison County Community Foundation. The Phil Pace Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide scholarship support to graduating high school seniors of North Harrison High School who have participated in a high school athletic program. Pace’s friends and colleagues originally established the scholarship in 1999 in his memory after he died July 26, 1998.
Pace, who was born Jan. 16, 1952, in Bedford, was the son of Robert and Betty Pace and had a sister, Cynthia. He attended Shawswick High School and graduated from Anderson University in 1970 with a degree in education.
In 1977, Pace married Doris Crawford. They have three children:
Jonathan, Neal and Brandon, all graduates of North Harrison High School.
Pace taught science and health at North Harrison for 24 years. While at North Harrison, he became involved in the athletic program, coaching basketball, football, golf, track and cross country. During his five years as the boys varsity head basketball coach, his teams won two sectional championships. “Phil was very dedicated to the school’s functions and growth of young athletes,” said his widow. He was a member of the Indiana State Teacher’s Association, leader of the youth basketball program, high school and post graduation intramural programs, drove the team buses to games, and worked many events as a school official. “Phil was dedicated to the physical, mental and social growth of the county’s youth through athletics as well as in the classroom,” Doris added.
Pace is buried in Beechgrove Cemetery in Bedford.
“The Phil Pace Memorial Scholarship Fund is a reflection on the dedication Phil had to the North Harrison Community School Corp. and the community’s development of our youth,” said Doris.
The Harrison County Community Foundation provided a matching gift to create this fund, and any additional donation is eligible for a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $25,000 per household per year.
Anyone who wishes to make a donation to the Phil Pace Memorial Scholarship Fund may contact the HCCF staff at 738-6668 or mail donations to the Foundation, P.O. Box 279, Corydon, IN 47112. Checks should be made out to Harrison County Community Foundation with the name of the fund in the memo line.
