Foundation Awards $400,000-plus in Grants

The Harrison County Community Foundation has awarded $411,819 to various projects and agencies supporting Harrison County.

Grants Committee Chairman Brian Churchill, a Foundation director since March 1997, said, “The committee has to make tough choices every grant cycle. Trimming over $3 million in requests to under $500,000 in grants is not easy when we have so many worthy projects to choose from.”

The successful grant applicants are:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, $13,500 to provide mentors to Harrison County children who have a parent incarcerated or involved in the court system;

Blue River Services Inc., $50,000 to provide construction dollars for
24 units of senior rental housing in Palmyra;

Blue River Services Inc., $2,940 to assist with improvements at the Corydon-Ramsey Group Home;

Comfort House, $8,736 to provide ongoing interviewing coverage;

Furthering Youth Inc., $12,500 to support the operating costs of the Gerdon Youth Center in Corydon;

Habitat for Humanity of Harrison County, $15,500 to provide a part- time staff person;

Harrison County Community Services Inc., $2,113 to purchase filing cabinets and a shredder;

Harrison County Swim Team Inc., $5,150 to purchase swim and technology equipment;

Harrison Education and Literacy Program, $15,000 to continue Freedom
101 classes;

Hayswood Theatre Group Inc., $61,526 for renovations at Hayswood Theatre in Corydon;

Hoosier Hills PACT, $10,237 to provide evidence-based programming in the Harrison County Jail;

Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources, $50,000 to support the construction of a new family aquatic center at O’Bannon Woods State Park;

Indiana University Southeast, $15,000 to support family and children’s programming for Harrison County residents;

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana Inc., $38,700 to provide Economics and Financial Literacy programs to Harrison County students;

Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft Inc., $9,000 to provide artist residencies in Harrison County schools;

Lanesville Youth Baseball and Softball, $25,000 for parking lot gravel;

Leadership Harrison County, $5,000 to purchase equipment for a community playground;

LifeSpan Resources Inc., $12,917 to provide matching funds for lift- equipped vans awarded by the Indiana Dept. of Transportation;

LifeSpring Inc., $2,808 to purchase equipment;

North Harrison Cal Ripken, $30,000 to purchase new fencing and covering for batting cages;

Our Place Inc., $5,000 to provide outpatient services to youth and their families who are chemically dependent;

The Nature Conservancy, $11,797 to develop interpretive signs and displays;

Town of Lanesville: $1,895 to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator; and

Town of Milltown: $7,500 to purchase a storm-warning siren.

The Foundation has provided more than $16 million to support not-for- profit projects and scholarships since October 1997.

With contributions from Caesars Indiana and donations from the community, the Foundation has a current market value of more than $63 million. Future grant applications will be accepted after Dec. 1, and must be postmarked or delivered to the HCCF staff by 5 p.m., Jan. 15, 2007, to be considered. The applications will be available after Nov. 1 from the Web at hccfindiana.org or contact the Foundation staff for a printed copy. All not-for-profit agencies serving Harrison County are invited to apply.
