More than 1,050 Harrison County children received their special copy of “The Little Engine that Could,” the inaugural book for the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. And a few children turning 5 in January received their program graduation book, “Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten.”
Each child enrolled in the Imagination Library program will receive an age-appropriate, hard-cover book in the mail each month until their 5th birthday.
Susan Dye, whose 2-year-old daughter, Sarah, is enrolled in the program said, “My daughter was so excited when she received her book in the mail. I read it to her that evening. The next morning when she woke up, she wanted two things: her milk and ‘The Little Engine that Could.’” Dye said her daughter carries the book from room to room. “This is a great program,” she said. “It creates a lot of family interaction.”
Inside “The Little Engine That Could” are some reading tips for sharing books with children. A special note from Dolly Parton at the opening of the book says: “This wonderful book and all of the books to follow are a special gift for you. If one wish of mine could come true, I hope my Imagination Library gives wings to all your dreams.” These special words also appear on the opening pages: “Try to be the first one up the mountain, The highest flying dreamer in the sky. Try your best to be an inspiration For others that are still afraid and shy. Try to make the most of every moment If you fail, get up and try again. Try each day a little harder If you never try, you never win.” (“Try” by Dolly Parton, published by Velvet Apple Music, used with permission.)
Jessica Brown, whose 8-month-old daughter, Reese, is enrolled in the program said, “This is a great opportunity to have this free book program offered to our children. It’s fun! I’m looking forward to even more special time reading with my little girl.”
