The Harrison County Community Foundation recently awarded more than 204 scholarships totaling $575,550 to county high school graduating seniors.

The renewable “Building Our Future” scholarship program was established by the HCCF board of directors in late 2006 and is the first renewable scholarship program of the Foundation. Each recipient will receive $5,000, renewable upon meeting criteria for four years, for a total of $20,000.

The 10 recipients of the “Building Our Future” scholarships are:

Corydon Central High School — Devin Kitterman, Chad Salomon, Lori Weis, Katelyn West Lanesville Junior-Senior High School — Jessica Ketterer North Harrison High School — Brandi Auberry, Ashley Eveslage, Hilary Thevenot Providence High School — Travis Miller South Central Junior-Senior High School — Rachel Geracitano

Through the Founders scholarship program, HCCF provided the following amounts to each school based on the reported number of seniors enrolled in January 2008: Corydon Central, $123,000; Lanesville, $38,000; North Harrison, $98,000; and South Central, $41,000. These scholarship awards were distributed among 128 graduating seniors throughout Harrison County. The Foundation requires at least 10 percent of each school’s total amount be distributed to students entering a certified vocational training program. The minimum awarded to any recipient is $1,000. Individual schools’ scholarship selection committees recommend the recipients and amounts awarded for both of these HCCF scholarship programs.

Additionally, $75,550 in scholarships were provided from restricted scholarship endowment funds created by members of the community. The HCCF now holds more than 50 of these special scholarship funds and continues to match donations to these or creation of a new scholarship fund. Many new scholarships were awarded this year, including the Susan Evans Austin Memorial Nursing Scholarship, Kent Watson Baseball Scholarship, R. William Baker Scholarship, Jonathan Delaney Dickerson Memorial Scholarship and the Tommy, Sarah and Bud Timberlake Scholarship awarded at Corydon Central High School, the Phil Pace Memorial Scholarship and the North Harrison Football PEP scholarships awarded at North Harrison High School and the Crandall Masonic Lodge 591 Josh Beanblossom Memorial Scholarship awarded at South Central Junior-Senior High School. Additionally, the Shireman Family scholarships were introduced for the first time this year. One graduating senior from each of the four high schools were honored at the Prosser School of Technology’s awards ceremony in May.
