The Harrison County Community Foundation Board of Directors looks forward to awarding $300,000 among the four Harrison County high schools for scholarships to graduating seniors in May. Since the first announcement in 1998, the Foundation has now provided $1.7 million for local high school scholarships.

The amounts provided this spring to each school’s scholarship program is based on the reported number of seniors enrolled as of Jan. 9. The amounts per school are Corydon Central $115,102; Lanesville $37,347; North Harrison, $102,245; South Central, $45,306.

“Last year, 132 graduating seniors received scholarships through this program. The students and parents are always appreciative, and we are now seeing many of our past recipients graduating from college and leading very successful careers,” said Brian Churchill, chairman of the HCCF grants committee. “It’s a great feeling to know that we were able to help them along the way.”

The Foundation requires at least 10 percent of each school’s total amount be distributed to students entering a certified vocational training program. The minimum awarded to any recipient is $1,000. Individual schools’ scholarship selection programs determine the recipients and amounts awarded.

Additionally, many of the HCCF restricted and memorial funds will provide scholarships this year. “I had the pleasure of presenting the Howard Haub scholarships last year at North Harrison High School senior awards night. Howard was a great man, and I always enjoy telling his story,” said Churchill.
